The UCCS Political Science Teacher Mentor Program is designed to train select Colorado high school teachers in UCCS Political Science course pedagogy and material. The program allows trained teachers to be the Teacher Mentors for students at their high schools who wish to participate in a UCCS online Political Science course in the fall 2020 or spring 2021 semester. Students will be enrolled with students from other high schools all over Colorado.

  • Attend all online class sessions to be trained by UCCS faculty in Political Science course pedagogy and material.
  • Earn a $250 stipend when you successfully complete the Political Science Teacher Mentor program.
  • Recommend which students should be considered for the UCCS online Political Science course offered fall 2020 or spring 2021. Tuition/fees are $550 per course.
  • Be available to mentor the students in their high school who have signed up to take the online Political Science course (offered fall 2020 or spring 2021). This includes checking in with students to ensure they are on-track with the course, answering any questions they might have or referring them to the professor, and helping the student to navigate the online course and expectations of a college level course.
  • Have regular communication with UCCS course professor and alert UCCS course professor if a student is struggling with their online course.
  • Provide future program improvements and recommendations.
  • Recommend your teachers (maximum of 2 teachers per school) to apply for the 2020 UCCS Department of Political Science Teacher Mentor Program. The teachers can be from any discipline, but more closely aligned subjects would likely be of more interest to the teacher. Some closely related courses: Civics, Forensics, Biology, Psychology, Sociology
  • Recommend which students should be considered for the UCCS online Political Science course offered fall 2020 or spring 2021. Tuition/fees are $550 per course.
  • Consider providing enrolled students with dedicated school study hall period to work on the online Political Science course.
  • Consider providing funding to pay or offset, students’ tuition for the UCCS online Political Science course (otherwise parents/guardians will pay for the course).
  • Provide future program improvements and recommendations.
  • Train high school teachers to be Political Science Teacher Mentors
  • Pay high school teachers a $250 stipend when they complete the Political Science Mentor program.
  • Provide quality Political Science curriculum.
  • Provide quality instruction of curriculum.
  • Communicate with students and Teacher Mentors on a regular basis.
  • Award transcripted UCCS credit to students who enroll in, and complete, the online Political Science course.
  • Analyze outcomes to make future program improvements and recommendations

Fall or Spring UCCS Online Political Science course for high school students:

Fall 2020: August 24 - December 19 (student recommendation form deadline August 20)

Spring 2021: January 19 - May 15 (student recommendation form deadline December 15)

  • Space is limited, student recommendations will be reviewed in the order they are received.
  • Tuition/fees are $550 per course (3 credits)

 

PSC 1100: The American Political System (3 credits)

A general introduction to the American political system with emphasis on the inter-relations among the various levels and branches of government, formal and informal political institutions, processes, and behavior. Required of all majors. Not open to those who have had other beginning courses in American government. Approved for LAS Social Science area requirement. Approved for Compass Curriculum requirement: Explore-Society, Health and Behavior. GT-SS1.
